     PUT THAT FAG OUT!!
The rocker’s guide to giving Up smoking,
and a quick look at the 7,000 year history of our addiction to nicotine. How to succeed at kicking the weed!
So, do you wanna give up smoking or not? Cos there’s no room here for half-hearted wimps. If you don’t really wanna do it, put the effing book back and stop wasting my time and your money. This is it! Forget the patches and the gum, and use supermarket shelf products to replace the sensation smoking brings to your body’s most sensitive receptor: your tongue. This is the answer. Now is the time to give up for good in one of the most pleasant ways possible. Your favourite rock songs and maybe even some air-guitar playing to get those demons out of your system will also help you through when times get tough. So, what are you waiting for? It’s a fun book. It’s informative. It Could Help You Stop Smoking. Alan Burridge smoked his first untipped Woodbine cigarette, lit from a burning car tyre in a neighbourhood friend’s back garden, when he was 12. Once bitten, forever smitten, as they say, and from the age of 16 he averaged 15 to 20 a day for 38 years. Giving it up for open heart surgery to replace a hereditary faulty heart valve was not easy, and he still uses the methods described in this book today to keep him on track. Going to gigs played a large part in his life, and still does; and Cream, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix, were big influences on his early life. Since 1980 he has been the fan club boss for Motorheadbangers, Motorhead’s official worldwide fan club, so he knows what being a rocker is all about.

BOURNEMOUTH ROCKS! Much like vampires, Rock ‘n’ Rollers usually only come out to play after dark and in this book over 50 groups and artistes who visited venues such as the Bournemouth Hard Rock, the Winter Gardens, Gaumont Theatre, Pavilion Theatre & Ballroom, The Ritz, Chelsea Village and The Village Bowl in Bournemouth, The Royal Ballrooms in Boscombe, The Arts Centre and Technical College in Poole and the numerous fine public houses like The George Hotel, The Old Harry, The Potter’s Arms and The Halfway Hotel who supported live music are all remembered. Venues changed their names, as do shops, and Boscombe’s Royal Ballrooms was also known as Starkers during this time and is currently called The Opera House. Somewhat autobiographical to reflect the flavour of the era, I have looked back at some of the musicians and bands who emerged from the local scene, either just for the love of playing live music like The Push, Abel Cain, Natural Gas and Rock Circus or seeing the dream through to making records such as Spontaneous Combustion, Team Dokus, The Dictators, Infantes Jubilate, Bram Stoker, Elias Hulk and Room. Then there were those who went the extra mile: Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band / Dantallion’s Chariot, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Greg Lake Band, John Wetton with Asia, Andy Summers with The Police, Lee Kerslake with Uriah Heep, and Al Stewart. The book also features: Mantovani, The Shadows, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tony Blackburn, Willy & The Workers, The Cavalier’s, The Small Faces, The Sean Buckley Set, Roy Orbison, The Creation, The Who, The Troggs, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Gene Pitney, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Move, The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart, Brother’s Bung, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, The Savoy Brown Blues Band, Chicken Shack, The Alan Bown, The Nice, Juicy Lucy, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Status Quo, The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Unit Four, The Time Checks, Giles, Giles & Fripp, The Shame, Shy Limbs, Transit Sound, Spontaneous Combustion, Time, Cream, Derek & The Dominoes, Yes, The Faces, Thin Lizzy, The Groundhogs, Led Zeppelin, Van Der Graff Generator, Curved Air, Rock Circus, Mugwump, Natural Gas, The Pink Fairies / Russell Hunter, AC/DC, Barclay James Harvest, Blue Oyster Cult, Climax Blues Band, Dire Straits, Kate Bush, The Tubes, Blondie and Motorhead.

WHEN UPTON HAD TRAINS Upton, near Poole in Dorset has the great injustice of not having too many books written about it, but due to a couple of chance meetings between an author and two publishers, it now has another. It has been said that if anything is planned then it never works out as anticipated; and it is very true of this book. The short essays and verse herein came together over a period of evenings and weekends as a result of some both fond and frightening thoughts about what the village of Upton was like for a young person growing up in the late 1950s and 1960s. The world changed when each one of us was born and became a part of it, and nothing can ever stand still. Thus, Upton also changed, developed and is still growing in much the same way, and this book reflects how it did so with due reference to the current village layout. If you’re new to the area this will be of great interest, or, if you were born and grew up here it will jog a few memories, but either way, it should bring a smile to your face. But mostly, it is a small part of our local history which needs to be remembered rather than forgotten. So this is how Upton was, it may not necessarily have been better, but most definitely quite a lot different.
